Cheonmasan and Saturday

If you've already looked through my pictures then you'll see that I went hiking up a mountain on Saturday. The plan was to meet up with Tim, Graham and Aldrin at Tim's apartment at 9am, and then set out for the climb. On my way to Tim's I got some sandwiches, six water bottles and a bunch of bananas, and I ended up at Tim's apartment building at exactly 9. At this point I assumed I was the first to get there, and I didn't know the code for the outer door of Tim's building so I waited outside. I also assumed that Tim was probably inside hungover and/or passed out, so I waited for Graham and Aldrin to show up. After a few minutes, Graham did show up, sticking his head out of the window to see if I was outside; apparently I was last to get there. Tim was hungover though, so Aldrin was giving him some water and while we waited for him to be ready we watched bits and pieces of Louis Theroux documentaries.

Eventually we set around around 9:50 or so, walking through Maseok to the base of Cheonmasan took us about half an hour, and then we started up the mountain. About ten minutes later we reach the first rest area and Tim decides we should stop here. After sitting for about ten minutes, Tim says "I'm going to be honest with you guys, I'm not climbing to the top of this mountain today," so he decides to go home while we continue on. This turned out to be a really good decision.

I'm not really going to describe the hike because you can just look at my Flickr or Facebook photos and see what it was like, but I will say that it was really, really hot. I know it was at least 90F, although the humidity wasn't bad, and I ended up getting sunburned on the back of my neck, only because I sweated so much that my shirt stretched out and exposed skin that I hadn't protected with sunscreen. Also, the view at the top, as you can see in the pictures, was very beautiful, and well worth the pain and torture of climbing the mountain. There is a pretty serious 40 minute part of the hike that isn't covered in my pictures because I put the camera away so I could use both hands on some steeper parts, and also just having it out of the way was nice. We reached the top at about 12:55pm, which means it took us about about 2.5 hours to get from bottom to top including rest time, and 3 hours from Tim's apartment to the top. We then spent about 20-25 minutes at the top before heading back down, which only took us about an hour and 45 minutes by Graham's calculations. The reason it was such a good decision for Tim to go home when he did is that in his dehydrated state he would've probably needed to be hospitalized if he made the full hike, plus it turned out we only really had enough water for three people, so nobody had to die on the mountain.

We ended up back around my apartment around 3:30-ish maybe, and I went straight to the shower to wash off all the dirt and sweat. Once I was clean again I headed over towards Graham's side of town to meet up with him and watch New Zealand play against Italy in a friendly rugby match. We also drank a couple beers, which might not have been the best idea considering I was still trying to rehydrate after the climb, and also hadn't eaten much besides sandwiches and bananas all day. Luckily, we soon met up with Ryley to go out to eat, and we went to another barbecue pork restaurant, this one used the pork rib whereas the other one used the more bacon type meat. As always, it was extremely delicious and cost us 11,000W per person. After dinner, we went back to Graham's where we marveled at his huge pet rabbit for a little bit and had an interesting chat about American politics with Graham (NZ), Ryley (US), and Barney (UK). We again went to the Nox bar for a little bit and Graham invited me to go to Guri with him to get American fast food on Sunday, which of course I agreed to, and then we went our separate ways after a 17 hour day involving about five hours of walking/hiking/climbing.
