Songra Festival

The week following the airshow, I knew we had an all-school festival but I had no idea just how ridiculous it would be. I guess since Korean kids spend so much time studying that when they have a chance to have fun they go all out. The first thing I noticed when I got to school is the costumes. Each class of each grade had a class costume/uniform, in the photo above you can see 3-10 class is in pajamas, 3-9 is dressed like old women, etc.

The morning was taken up with physical activities. There was a relay race, tug-of-war, a race wearing scuba fins, jump-rope with giant ropes, and so on. Around lunchtime a whole heap of Lotteria burgers were delivered, which, by the way, are terrible, and then after lunch we moved into the gym for a talent show featuring a little talent and a lot of ridiculosity.

Two classes had a Sparta theme, this is class 3-6 with their fancy banner.

Two of the girls from class 3-5. The one on the right told me in the hallways "Brian, I love you, I need you, I want you," then as I went into the teachers office, "missing youuuuu!! Brian!!" and ran off down the hall singing my name. She also jumped me on the street once when I was walking home and tried to hold my hand and walk with me.

There's always a boring class that doesn't dress up. This is class 3-4.

Running the relay race.

This game involved holding one leg up and trying to knock the other people down.

Class 3-2 was the medical team.

Photo-bombing.

Racing in flippers.

Whole class jump-rope time.

There was face-painting...

...and posing...

...and violence...

...and pulling down pants.

Class 3-2 engaged in a tug-of-war.

Some students tried to launch people using a short bit of rope.

More tug-of-war, this was during the championship match.

For the talent show, a group of boys dressed up as girls to perform a dance.

Here they are dancing. And here's the song they're performing:

There was a student free-for-all dance contest. The boy in the middle is the one whose best friend told me he's transgender, and his best friend is the girl on his left wearing sweatpants. I don't really believe he's transgender, but he's a very feminine boy and she's a very masculine girl, and they are always together. I guess it's a match made in heaven.

The school also brought in some pros. There were these breakdancers, some ballet dancers and some dancers who performed a tango, I think.

The finale was a love story performed by 3 of the teachers. The two men were fighting for the love of the woman but ended up falling in love with each other. It was pretty funny and the students loved it. Then there was a little closing ceremony where students were given awards for things, all of which was done in Korean so I have no idea what any of it was about, and that was the end.
